Skin Care Done Right at Home

Great skin is more than just being born with an envious DNA: Your everyday habits actually play a significant role in what you will be looking at in the mirror. But depending on what product reviews you read or doctors you consult, there are dizzying amounts of opinions out there about everything from how to moisturize to how to protect yourself from UV rays to repairing damages done on your facial tissues. Ultimately, skin care is just plain personal. So here's what you need to remember to navigate all the noise.

It is not enough to own an excellent skincare product: for the products to be most effective, you must also apply them in the correct order. Your skincare routine will vary depending on your skin type, the ingredients and formulas of your products, and the time of day. However, a good rule of thumb for skincare routine is to apply skin care products in order of consistency, from thinner skin care products to thicker ones, as thinner skin care products will not penetrate the thicker skincare products.

Whether you have a three-step routine, there is one thing that everyone can do to improve their skin care, and that is to apply products in the correct order. No matter what you are concerned about your skin, you want to start with a clean, toned foundation, then layer on your concentrates and active ingredients, and close things out with moisture sealing - and, of course, a daily SPF. So here are the steps to a great skincare routine.

1. Start by Cleansing

Gently washing your face is an important starting point of any skincare routine. It helps to remove dirt, makeup, and oil from the skin, leaving it feeling clean and refreshed. There are a few different ways to wash your face, but the most important thing is to be gentle. Here are some helpful skincare tips on how to cleanse and wash your face the right way:

-Start by wetting your face with warm water. This will help to open up your pores and make it easier to remove dirt and impurities.

-Apply a small amount of cleanser to your palms and massage it into your skin in circular motions. Be careful and avoid scrubbing too harshly, as this can end up irritating the skin.

-Rinse away the cleanser with lukewarm water and pat your face dry with a soft towel.

Apply Toner

Apply toner to a clean face before proceeding with your skincare routine. If you are using an exfoliating toner with ingredients like glycolic acid, preferably use it only at night. However, such hydrating formulas can be used twice a day. Do not use an exfoliating toner, retinoids, or other exfoliators simultaneously.

Finish with Moisturizer

In the final stage of our 3 steps skincare routine, if you want your skin to look its best, don't forget to moisturize. Moisturizer helps your skin retain moisture and keeps all the other products you've applied from drying out your skin. Look for a lightweight lotion with SPF 30 or higher for daytime use and a thicker cream for nighttime use. Note that if you have dry skin, you may want to use a cream twice a day.
