Why Everyone is Obsessed with Korean Pharmacy Skincare

"Korean pharmacy skincare" has become a common search term, but the name actually explains what makes the category different. These products were sold through pharmacies in Korea rather than beauty counters, which meant they were formulated to treat a specific skin problem instead of functioning as a general daily product. That's a different starting point than most skincare, and it shows in how concentrated and single-purpose the formulas tend to be. Two of the most talked-about products in this category are Melanosa Cream and Azalea Cream.

Melanosa Cream

Melanosa is a 4% hydroquinone cream. Hydroquinone has been used for decades to treat hyperpigmentation and melasma because it works: it slows down how much melanin the skin produces, which is what actually fades darker patches instead of just covering them up.

The tradeoff is that it's not meant to be used indefinitely. It's typically applied for a defined stretch of time, and consistent sunscreen use isn't optional alongside it. Without SPF, sun exposure can bring the pigment right back, sometimes darker than before.

Azalea Cream

Azalea Cream is formulated with 20% azelaic acid, a much higher concentration than what's found in most drugstore products. It's known for doing several things at once: calming inflammation, helping keep pores from clogging, working against acne-causing bacteria, and fading the dark marks acne tends to leave behind. It also doesn't increase sun sensitivity the way some other acids do.

Mild tingling in the first few days of use is common and generally settles as skin adjusts.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Neither product is meant to replace a full skincare routine. They're targeted treatments for a specific concern and are usually applied only to the affected area rather than the whole face. Because both are stronger than typical over-the-counter formulas, checking in with a dermatologist or skincare provider before starting either one, especially alongside other treatments like peels or lasers, is generally recommended.
